NATURAL ATTRACTIONS |
1. Waimangu Volcanic Valley
Located 20 minutes drive south of Rotorua is the impressive Waimangu Volcanic Valley. It is without doubt, one of the best things to do in Rotorua, especially if you love walking.
It combines an incredible “out of this world experience” of seeing the volcanic valley, and a lush rainforest not seen in the other thermal parks. It is quite spectacular.
The trail is 4 km from the visitor centre all the way to Lake Rotomahana, so make sure you have the right walking shoes. Once you reach the lake, you have the choice of taking a 90 minute cruise (extra cost / can pay for on entry) and then the free shuttle back to the visitor centre. The shuttle buses are available to use anytime and will pick you up and drop you off at various locations if needed.
Features include Frying Pan Lake, Cathedral Rocks, Inferno crater, geysers, hot springs and silica terraces.

3. Kerosene Creek
A magical spot of geothermal heated water, Kerosene Creek is a great place to go for a quiet dip.
Get your bathing costume on and enjoy the shallow stream among shaded bushland. This free natural attraction is a short drive south of Rotorua, before turning down a bumpy gravel road. As it’s not right in Rotorua, it also not as packed as you would expect a free natural attraction to be, though summer months does bring extra numbers.
Just a tip. There is drop toilet here but if you can avoid it then do so. It’ does not appear to be regularly maintained.
4. Lake Rotorua
Lake Rotorua is the second largest lake on the North Island. Lake Taupo to the south is the largest.
Swimming, fishing, canoeing and stand up paddle boards are all popular Rotorua activities on the lake. It’s also the perfect place for a picnic or BBQ with family and friends right on the water front.
The lakefront playground is a great spot to take the kids too for some family fun.
5. Te Puia
While it may be the smallest of the thermal parks, Te Puia has one of the biggest Rotorua attractions, a mammoth geyser.
Pohutu Geyser is the largest geyser in the Southern Hemisphere, reaching heights of 30 metres. It regularly erupts every hour and is continuous over several minutes. It is quite a spectacular scene and one of the best features I have seen in all the thermal parks. If you are here to see geysers, don’t miss this one.
